Look and feel
If your potential customer knows nothing about you and they come to your website to learn more about you, your web design is actually making the first impression. Think about the first thing you’d like your visitor to think about you. Do you want them to think you run a professional business or does your small business have more of a fun vibe to it? Now think about your web design. Is it getting that message across?
Having a site that is hard to navigate makes people want to leave. Isn’t the object getting them to stay on long enough for them to convert? Double and triple navigation structures may seem like a great idea in theory, but are confusing in practice.
Confusing call to action
What do you want people to do when they come to your website? Do you want them to sign up for a newsletter? Would you like your visitors to buy a product? Or maybe you just want them to contact you by using a form or picking up the telephone. Whatever it is you want your visitors to do, be sure your website makes it very easy for them to do it.
Content includes both pictures and words. What does your content say about your small business? Are the pictures that you’re using nice and crisp? What about the text on your pages? You should always use proper grammar and at the very least use a spell check. The kinds of photographs and words that you use in your web design to express yourself can say a lot about your small business.
What does I mean by execution? I mean does your website actually work. Make sure there are no broken links and all the navigation is taking you where it logically should. Also, make sure that all those bells and whistles that you wanted your web designer to put in actually work! If you have errors like this appearing on your website, what kind of impression do you think it will make on your visitors? Also, don’t use the “coming soon” page. It does nothing for your visitor except to tell them you’re too busy to get to that. It’s best just to leave that page out until you get a chance to finish it.
In summary, a web design for small business isn’t something that should be taken lightly. There are plenty of things to think about and mistakes to avoid in bringing your business to the internet.
