WordPress is an open-source CMS, content management system, used to create websites. When it was first introduced, WordPress was a platform to build blogs on, but that mentality has changed. It is now a platform that you can use to create beautiful web designs that aren’t just for blogging, although it’s still very good at that as well!
Cost and ease of use
WordPress is free! If your website uses WordPress as a CMS, there’s no need to pay monthly or yearly service fees for the use of software, just your hosting and maintenance. Management of your website happens through a user-friendly backend administration panel, if you wish to manage it yourself. Adding new content or changing existing content is as easy as using your favorite word processor program.
The code that it uses is open to the public which means that if the base installation of WordPress doesn’t have a particular feature that you need, it is easily added by a plugin or some custom programming. This means that your web design will be scalable and will be able to grow to fit your needs as time goes on. Social media integration into your website doesn’t need a completely new web design, just some tweaks to your existing site.
Search engine optimization makes it easier for search engines to go through your web site and get the information they need to place them on search pages. WordPress makes it very simple to integrate SEO into your web design and with a few adjustments, you’ll be ready to go. Matt Cutts, Google’s head of web spam team, discusses in this video how WordPress helps in SEO (plus a lot of other interesting stuff about SEO). It’s about 45 minutes long, but it’s worth a watch.
If you want to go more in-depth, there are various SEO-related plugins available on the WordPress site.
Because the WordPress community is growing everyday, the amount of help available in using it is immense. There are lots of support forums out there where you can search through questions you may have or even post your own questions.
These are just some of the reasons why I recommend WordPress for my clients to use. If you have any questions on web designs using WordPress, please leave a comment below or use the contact form on the right to send a message.
